I've been thinking about it for a while but today I finally decided to take the plunge and try out the '30 Days of Yoga' challenge.

Basically, back when I was looking for an 'exercise at home' option, I found a youtube channel called Yoga with Adriene. I liked it because it was well explained, homey and Adriene always reminds you to go at your own pace. There are a lot of other fitness based channels which are very much "IF YOU'RE NOT DYING YOU'RE NOT TRYING HARD ENOUGH!" ...which frankly, aren't conducive to healthy workouts. Adriene doesn't put you in that mood and she also tries to come up with videos based on specific health problems - if you have a bad back, if you're sick, etc. If she doesn't have a video, you comment to ask about how you can practice yoga despite having whichever ailment you have, and she answers.

So...the 30 Days of Yoga Challenge.

While I'm taking part in the challenge I'm also supposed to note down observations of my body and my mind. I suppose it's all part of a mindfulness exercise. More, I'm suppose to be aware if taking part in this challenge changes any of my day to day habits. Since today is day 1, I'm not going to look for much.

A few observations:

- My body is stiff, so getting a stretch was a good idea.

- My wrists are weak, they ache at my usual angle for downward dog, but that just means I adjust so they're not taking too much of my upper body weight.

- Overall I'm trying to be more careful about moving smoothly and naturally. Rather than trying my best to get into position, I can lag behind the video, it's all good.

- Yoga probably involves controlling your thoughts - going into plank is always tough because you're challenging your body in a strenuous way and telling it to stay there. At least while you're running or moving, it's distracted and it can forget about the pain (until later), with yoga, you're aware of everything. I suppose that's the point but I haven't reached how it's supposed to help me successfully carry out a plank without giving up on it after 30 seconds and forcing myself to go on. I suppose there's a mental exercise there, but I won't hold myself to it yet.

That's it for today, short and sweet (Day 1 after all). I'm hoping to fit in my yoga practices in the evenings before I sleep on the weekdays. I hope it works out.

This is basically me trying to see if I can schedule some kind of health related activity into my daily routine. I've been getting more unfit as of late, and I don't want to continue down that path.

I hope that this experience also helps me consciously schedule my day and stick to it for a non-work related activity.
